A 26-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man was charged Friday with the holdup of a Shawnee liquor store that sparked a wild police chase and shooting.

Antwan T. Robinson was charged in Johnson County District Court with aggravated robbery and his bond was set at $250,000, according to court records.

He was accused of robbing the Halftime Liquor Store at 15810 Shawnee Mission Parkway just after 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Shawnee police said that during the robbery a man forced two people into a cooler before fleeing. The two victims were not injured, according to police.

Two Shawnee officers responded to the liquor store while the robbery was taking place and pursued the man as he fled in a black Chevrolet Cobalt.

The man’s description was similar to other recent robberies in Shawnee, police said.

Shawnee officers chased the car into Kansas City, Kan., where they lost the car. Officers from Shawnee and Kansas City, Kan., continued to look for the car into the night. About 12:15 a.m. Friday, Kansas City, Kan., police located the car and chased it on Interstate 435 back into Shawnee.

Shawnee officers joined in the pursuit at Johnson Drive, where the man led police west on Shawnee Mission Parkway and then north on Kansas 7.

The man lost control of the car while attempting to get off K-7 onto Interstate 70. While attempting to take the man into custody, Shawnee officers fired shots. The man regained control of his car and continued west on I-70 in the eastbound lanes, according to police.

About a mile and a half later, the man’s vehicle crashed into another vehicle.

The suspect tried to flee on foot, but he was arrested by officers after a short distance. The suspect was taken to the hospital after his arrest, but police did not say if the injuries were related to the crash or were from police gunfire.
