Updated: 2013-05-24T03:11:05Z

A woman who died after her car rolled over a curb and hit a traffic pole at a Northeast area intersection early Thursday had been shot, Kansas City police said.

She was identified Thursday night as 21-year-old Ashley Garrett.

Officers responded about 12:40 a.m. to Independence and Hardesty avenues to investigate the need for an ambulance, after witnesses saw a car slowly rolling through the intersection, through a red light, with its headlights off. Officers found the driver unconscious, bleeding and leaning against the steering wheel. She was taken to a hospital, where she died.

Police did not release the name of the woman, believed to be in her early 20s. Police said she did not live in the area and had not lived in the Kansas City arealong.

Investigators were trying to locate relatives and determine what the woman may have been doing in the area.
