Cerner, KC Southern tumble, YRC rallies

Small companies are taking the limelight on a choppy start to the week.

Most regional stocks fell slightly Monday in what turned into a choppy start for the week.

The biggest percentage losers were Cerner, off 1.8 percent; and Kansas City Southern, off 2.1 percent.

Gainers included YRC, , up 15 percent; and Commerce Bancshares, up .8 percent.

Sprint closed down 3 cents, or .4 percent.

Overall, the Russell 2000, an index of small-company stocks, rose above 1,000 for the first time Monday. The index is outpacing the Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index this year.

Small stocks are doing well partly because they are less exposed to Europe's economic woes than large companies.

The Dow fell 19.12 points, or 0.12 percent, to close at 15,335.28.

The S&P 500 fell 1.18 points, or 0.07 percent, to close at 1,666.29. The Nasdaq composite fell 2.53 points, or 0.07 percent, to close at 3,496.43..

BATS 1000 fell 9.09 points, or 0.05 percent, to close at 18,763.40.

The Russell rose a point to 998.

Three stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was light at 3.2 billion shares.

Regional stocks

Capitol Federal Financial rose 10 cents, or 0.83%, to close at $12.12.

Cerner Corp. fell $1.81, or 1.83%, to close at $97.02.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. rose 34 cents, or 0.79%, to close at $43.44.

Compass Minerals fell 7 cents, or 0.08%, to close at $89.65.

DST Systems Inc. rose 37 cents, or 0.52%, to close at $71.73.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. fell 31 cents, or 1.48%, to close at $20.68.

Garmin Ltd. fell 22 cents, or 0.60%, to close at $36.66.

Great Plains Energy fell 10 cents, or 0.41%, to close at $24.23.

H&R Block Inc. fell 3 cents, or 0.10%, to close at $29.61.

Inergy L.P. rose 30 cents, or 1.23%, to close at $24.79.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. rose 16 cents, or 0.42%, to close at $37.98.

Kansas City Southern fell $2.46, or 2.10%, to close at $114.70.

Layne Christensen Co. fell 28 cents, or 1.25%, to close at $22.04.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. fell 4 cents, or 0.04%, to close at $110.91.

Sprint Nextel Corp. fell 3 cents, or 0.41%, to close at $7.29.

UMB Financial Corp. rose 34 cents, or 0.65%, to close at $52.99.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. fell 5 cents, or 0.11%, to close at $47.41.

YRC Worldwide Inc. rose $2.87, or 14.96%, to close at $22.06.
