Local soldier drowns in Afghanistan

A soldier from Liberty drowned Wednesday in Kandahar, Afghanistan, while attempting to cross a body of water during combat operations, the Defense Department announced Friday.

He was identified as Sgt. 1st Class Trenton L. Rhea, 33, who served with the 200th Military Police Command, U.S. Army Reserve in Belton. He grew up in Oakley, Kan.

Rhea was on his second tour in Afghanistan. He also had served in Iraq and at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

He leaves his wife and three daughters.
