Central Mo. stays alive in D-II baseball
The Kansas City Star
Central Missouri rallied for seven runs in the final two innings for a 7-3 win over Missouri Southern in an NCAA Division II Central Regional elimination game on Friday afternoon in Mankato, Minn.
Missouri Southern’s Drew Noble held the Mules, 36-12, without a hit through 6 1/3 innings before a one-out single by John Oropeza. Central Missouri took the lead in the eighth on a leadoff walk, a bunt single, a throwing error, another error and two sacrifice bunts. Oropeza also added a two-run double.
Central Missouri will next play at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. If top-seeded Minnesota State eliminated Missouri Western on Friday night, then the Mules will play the St. Cloud State-Southern Arkansas loser. If Missouri Western wins, the Mules will play the Griffons.
NCAA Division I golf regionals
Missouri will have to jump two teams and make up 8 shots Saturday to advance to the NCAA golf championships. The Tigers, 27 over par, are in seventh place after two of three rounds at the Columbus, Ohio, regional, trailing New Mexico and Texas Tech, who are tied for fifth at 19 over.
The low five teams at each regional and the low individual not competing on those five teams qualify for the NCAA championships at The Capital City Club, Crabapple Course, in Atlanta.
The Tigers’ Ryan Zech dropped to 3 over for the tournament after a 4-over 75 but is 3 shots off the individual lead if MU does not qualify as a team.
UMKC is in 13th place at the 14-team Fayetteville, Ark., regional. KU’s Chris Gilbert, competing as an individual, is 5 shots off the lead after an even-par 72 put him 1 over for the regional.
