Any notion that the conservative-dominated Kansas Legislature would hum along like a well-oiled machine is proving wrong by the hour.

Word just came Friday morning that a budget conference committee scheduled for 9 a.m. had been canceled. That all but guarantees that lawmakers will return next week for what could be several more days of wrangling over tax and budget issues.
When the session began in January, there was lots of talk about wrapping it up in 80 days. But today is Day 84, and the count continues.
