Kansas City is making welcome progress in paving more streets, fixing water lines faster and responding to loose dog complaints.

So Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Circo was on point Wednesday when she praised City Council colleagues for rallying around top priorities for the whole city, rather than just sticking up for what’s important to their districts.

But she made another statement that many residents would agree with: The city still can do a lot more to improve its basic services.

“Our work’s still not done,” she said at a council business session.

Mayor Sly James and the full council have set aside more time Monday for a long look at the city’s finances over the coming few years.

What should result from that get-together is an even more concrete plan to see where the money hose needs to be pointed to make more dramatic upgrades in services to the public.
