Save the date for the American Royal’s barbecue championship weekend

Pitmasters, start your grills: The American Royal’s 34th Annual World Series of Barbecue Championship Weekend is set for October 4-6 in the West Bottoms.

More than 500 teams of barbecue pros will compete for trophies and the prized Grand Champion title. The championship is the weekend’s main event, but there will also be cooking demonstrations, live music, a barbecue trade expo, and a petting zoo and face painting for kids, according to a press release from The American Royal.

A celebration ceremony for the 2013 Barbecue Hall of Fame inductees is planned for Saturday, October 5. For more info, go to
