Man hurt while trying to learn to fly paraglider

Updated: 2013-05-13T12:09:53Z

— A 43-year-old man suffered a broken pelvis and broken leg after plummeting 60 feet to the ground while trying to learn how to operate a paraglider.

KRCG-TV reports the crash happened around 5:25 p.m. Sunday south of Columbia. Boone County Fire Division Chief Gale Blomenkamp says the man had taken off in his glider and was gaining altitude when his lines became tangled and he lost speed, causing him to crash.

An instructor and one other trainee were at the scene but were not injured. The victim was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
