Jitters bumps Alert Energy Caffeine Gum from store shelf

Updated: 2013-05-09T16:46:17Z

Wrigley did the right thing by pulling its new caffeinated chewing gum product off the shelf.

Alert Energy Caffeine Gum was introduced recently and joined a multitude of other products with caffeine in them. But adding the drug to chewing gum got the attention of the Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA expressed concern over the effect the gum will have on children. It offers the same jolt as a half-cup of coffee.

That could be a bit much especially in classrooms, where teachers try to maintain a calm, study-ready atmosphere for children. They can’t have some kids hopped up on caffeinated gum.
