Garmin, YRC, Kansas City Southern finish higher

Share in Garmin Ltd. climbed nearly 2.5 percent Thursday after the market looked at the company’s quarterly results and decided there were good reasons to buy the stock.

The Olathe-based leader of satellite-based navigation equipment on Wednesday reported lower revenue and a slightly higher quarterly profit, which caused the stock to fall about 4 percent.

More than half that loss was regained Thursday, as shares in Garmin closed at $34.51, up 83 cents.

Also closing higher Thursday was YRC, which climbed nearly 4 percent, or 27 cents. The Overland Park-based trucking company releases quarterly results early Friday.

Other movers of a positive variety included Sprint, Cerner, Kansas City Life and Kansas City Southern.

Ovearll, encouraging news about the job market and higher profits from CBS, Facebook and other companies sent stock prices higher on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 130 points, or 0.9 percent, to close at 14,831 Thursday, wiping out nearly all of its 138-point fall the day before.

The Standard & Poor's 500 climbed 15 points, or 0.9 percent, to 1,597.

The Nasdaq rose 41 points, or 1.3 percent, to 3,340 points.

CBS and Facebook rose after reporting income that was better than Wall Street analysts had been expecting.

The Labor Department reported that applications for unemployment benefits fell to a five-year low last week.April’s jobless report is due out Friday morning before the official start of trading.

Three stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was slightly below average at 3.4 billion shares.

The BATS 1000 rose 160.74 points, or 0.90 percent, to close at 18,004.19.

Capitol Federal Financial rose 7 cents, or 0.60%, to close at $11.80.

Cerner Corp. rose $1.17, or 1.22%, to close at $96.84.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. rose 30 cents, or 0.76%, to close at $39.68.

Compass Minerals rose $1.05, or 1.24%, to close at $86.06.

DST Systems Inc. rose 16 cents, or 0.23%, to close at $68.63.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. rose 47 cents, or 2.42%, to close at $19.87.

Garmin Ltd. rose 83 cents, or 2.46%, to close at $34.51.

Great Plains Energy was unchanged at $23.82.

H&R Block Inc. rose 22 cents, or 0.79%, to close at $28.15.

Inergy L.P. fell 4 cents, or 0.18%, to close at $21.97.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. rose 59 cents, or 1.67%, to close at $35.95.

Kansas City Southern rose $1.74, or 1.68%, to close at $105.56.

Layne Christensen Co. rose 27 cents, or 1.35%, to close at $20.22.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. rose 67 cents, or 0.62%, to close at $108.13.

Sprint Nextel Corp. rose 4 cents, or 0.57%, to close at $7.10.

UMB Financial Corp. rose 40 cents, or 0.82%, to close at $49.15.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. rose 41 cents, or 0.98%, to close at $42.38.

YRC Worldwide Inc. rose 27 cents, or 3.60%, to close at $7.76.
