Kansas City Southern falls nearly 5 percent; Waddell & Reed, Layne & KC Life drop 2 percent

Shares in Kansas City Southern hit the brakes Wednesday, falling nearly 5 percent, as the market tumbled the most in two weeks.

Kansas City Southern was the biggest percentage loser among the major regional companies. Others with notable percentage dips were financial stocks such as Commerce Bancshares, UMB Financial Corp., Waddell & Reed, Capitol Federal and Kansas City Life.

The handful of winners, with small gains, included H & R Block, up .7 percent, Sprint, up .1 percent, and O’Reilly Automotive, up .1 percent.

Overall, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 138 points to close at 14,701 Wednesday. The Standard & Poor's 500 dropped 14 to 1,582. The Nasdaq lost 29 points to 3,299.

All three indexes fell 0.9 percent.

Small-company stocks fell more than the rest of the market. The Russell 2000 index sank 2.5 percent.

Stocks sagged following a slowdown in hiring and manufacturing last month. Big-name companies reported disappointing results.

Bond yields fell as investors sought safety. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.63 percent, its lowest of the year.

Three stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was below average at 3.4 billion shares.

The BATS 1000 fell 199.86 points, or 1.11 percent, to close at 17,843.45.

Regional stocks

Capitol Federal Financial fell 10 cents, or 0.85%, to close at $11.73.

Cerner Corp. fell $1.10, or 1.14%, to close at $95.67.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. fell 73 cents, or 1.82%, to close at $39.38.

Compass Minerals fell $1.53, or 1.77%, to close at $85.01.

DST Systems Inc. fell 68 cents, or 0.98%, to close at $68.47.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. fell 43 cents, or 2.17%, to close at $19.40.

Garmin Ltd. fell $1.40, or 3.99%, to close at $33.68.

Great Plains Energy fell 31 cents, or 1.28%, to close at $23.82.

H&R Block Inc. rose 19 cents, or 0.68%, to close at $27.93.

Inergy L.P. rose 2 cents, or 0.09%, to close at $22.01.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. fell 74 cents, or 2.05%, to close at $35.36.

Kansas City Southern fell $5.25, or 4.81%, to close at $103.82.

Layne Christensen Co. fell 48 cents, or 2.35%, to close at $19.95.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. rose 14 cents, or 0.13%, to close at $107.46.

Sprint Nextel Corp. rose 1 cents, or 0.14%, to close at $7.06.

UMB Financial Corp. fell $1.59, or 3.16%, to close at $48.75.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. fell 90 cents, or 2.10%, to close at $41.97.

YRC Worldwide Inc. fell 1 cents, or 0.13%, to close at $7.49.
