The victims, identified as Qwentelia Vanzant and Jaron Syrus, both 25, of Blue Springs, had been at a gathering in Kansas City and were likely heading home, police said, when they stopped at a convenience store, Discount Smokes at 5401 Blue Parkway, about 8:45 p.m.
They encountered some people with whom they had had an ongoing dispute, police believe. The encounter escalated into a physical fight, police said. A man on the other side of the dispute pulled a gun and shot the victims.
A vehicle fled the scene after the shooting.
The victims’ 3-year-old son and Vanzant’s 7-year-old daughter were inside their vehicle during the fight and shooting. Police released the children to a relative Monday night. Homicide Sgt. Joe Mabin would not say whether the children saw the fight or shooting.
Investigators are trying to determine exactly how the disturbance unfolded.
