‘From the Desk of’

‘From the desk of’

The envelope includes a note

Which casual acquaintance wrote;

On silken paper, let it show

It’s “From the Desk of”

so-and-so.

(Such stationery adds a touch

Of classiness...perhaps too much.)

But in my case, I’ll make this plea:

No stationery thus for me.

The reason why? I make no claim

To “From the Desk of” with my name;

’Cause under all

these cluttered stacks

Of unpaid bills and past-due tax;

The letters — forms — the growing mounds

Of which such paperwork abounds —

Uncertain whether, midst this sprawl

I’ve even got a desk at all!
