YRC, Garmin, Compass and DST end with gains

Shares in most regional stocks ended Wednesday in positive territory, with YRC finishing as the largest percentage gainer.

The Overland Park-based trucking giant closed at $7.35, up 29 cents or more than 4 percent.

Other winners included Garmin, up nearly 2 percent; Compass Minerals, up 1.4 percent; Layne Christensen, up 3.5 percent; and DST, up more than 1 percent.

Sprint, which released earnings early in the day, closed 1 cent lower.

Cerner releases earnings Thursday after the market closes. Its shares fell about 1 percent Wednesday. DST also releases numbers Thursday.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average edged lower Wednesday, held back by disappointing quarterly results that included a subscriber slump at AT&T and a weak profit forecast from Procter & Gamble.

The broader Standard and Poor's 500 index was little changed on a day when many corporations reported their first-quarter performance, with mixed results.

The Dow fell 43.16 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 14,676.30.

The S&P 500 index was up 0.01 point at 1,578.79.

The Nasdaq composite rose 0.32 points, or 0.01 percent, to 3,269.65.

The BATS 1000 rose 31.81 points, or 0.18 percent, to close at 17,850.62.

Regional stocks

Capitol Federal Financial rose 2 cents, or 0.17%, to close at $11.88.

Cerner Corp. fell 79 cents, or 0.85%, to close at $92.14.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. rose 36 cents, or 0.91%, to close at $39.82.

Compass Minerals rose $1.12, or 1.41%, to close at $80.58.

DST Systems Inc. rose 79 cents, or 1.13%, to close at $70.62.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. rose 26 cents, or 1.32%, to close at $20.03.

Garmin Ltd. rose 66 cents, or 1.96%, to close at $34.25.

Great Plains Energy rose 3 cents, or 0.13%, to close at $23.70.

H&R Block Inc. fell 13 cents, or 0.46%, to close at $28.22.

Inergy L.P. fell 6 cents, or 0.28%, to close at $21.64.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. fell 30 cents, or 0.82%, to close at $36.08.

Kansas City Southern fell 16 cents, or 0.15%, to close at $106.75.

Layne Christensen Co. rose 64 cents, or 3.51%, to close at $18.89.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. fell 25 cents, or 0.25%, to close at $101.12.

Sprint Nextel Corp. fell 1 cents, or 0.14%, to close at $7.09.

UMB Financial Corp. rose 35 cents, or 0.71%, to close at $49.48.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. rose 40 cents, or 0.98%, to close at $41.39.

YRC Worldwide Inc. rose 29 cents, or 4.11%, to close at $7.35.
