A former Johnson County sheriff’s deputy was placed on probation Wednesday after pleading guilty to inappropriately touching a jail prisoner.

Vernon Finkenbinder was sentenced in Johnson County District Court, where he pleaded guilty in October to a felony charge of aggravated battery. He surrendered his law enforcement certification as part of a plea agreement.

Finkenbinder, 40, was placed on probation for 18 months and received an underlying eight-month prison sentence that he could serve if he violates conditions of his probation.

Though Finkenbinder blames himself for what happened, his lawyer said after Wednesday’s plea hearing that it is important to note that the victim in the case was “the catalyst” for what happened.

“She wrote a letter to another inmate calling it her ‘get out of jail free’ card,” said attorney Trey Pettlon.
