KC Golden Gloves championships begin Thursday night

One of the region’s longest running sporting events begins Thursday with the 78th Annual Kansas City Golden Gloves championships.

Preliminary rounds Thursday and Friday will be held at Turner Rec Center, 831 S. 55th Street, in Kansas City, Kan., with Saturday’s finals at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan.

Competition each night begins at 7 p.m.

Winners will advance to the Golden Gloves National Championship in Salt Lake City next month.

Among those competing this weekend: Cam Awesome, a two-time national Golden Gloves champion, and Matthew Anani, whose mother, Sumya, was a national champion boxer.
