The victim’s granddaughter called police just before 1 p.m. and said she believed that something was wrong with her grandfather and that she was on her way to his home in the 4300 block of Norton Avenue.
Officers found the man dead inside the home. They also found a baseball bat and knife possibly used in the attack. They took his wife to a hospital to be evaluated. She had a possible wound to her face, police said.
Police said they were not looking for additional suspects. Investigators applied for a search warrant to search the home for evidence. Police did not release a motive or details of what preceded the attack.
The couple got married in 1974, records show. The victim’s sister said he worked as a trash truck driver, just like his father, until retirement about 10 years ago.
She described him as in good health and said he helped his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whenever he could.
“He would pick them up from school, whatever was needed,” said the sister, whose name The Star isn’t using because charges haven’t been filed. “He took good care of them. He was a good guy.
“The whole family loved him.”
