The new business includes a 200-seat restaurant and three 80-seat theater auditoriums. It is opening in 14,000 square feet of space at the Prairie Village shopping center formerly occupied by Einstein Bros. Bagels and the Macy’s home store.
“Progress is good, and we are on schedule,” said Justin Scott, a spokesman for Dineplex International.
Dineplex was formed by Frank Rash and Peter Brown, former top executives at AMC Entertainment. Brown was the CEO and president of AMC; Rash was senior vice president of development. If the first Standees is successful, Brown and Rash would like to open others in the region and across the nation.
The complete name is Standees — The Entertaining Eatery, and it honors Stan Durwood, founder of AMC, and the time when theaters sold special tickets for “standees” who stood in the back of the auditorium.
The full-service restaurant will feature booth-style seating, and the bar will have a 35-foot-long, horseshoe-shaped series of video screens above it. Patrons are welcome to bring food and beverages into the theaters but will not be able to order inside the auditoriums.
“Standees is a restaurant first and foremost,” Scott said.
The business will be geared toward adults, with 40 and over being the primary market. The movies also will be aimed toward a more sophisticated market. The entrance will be at the corner of the former Macy’s home store facing the clock tower at the shopping center. There also will be outdoor seating for up to 32 customers.
Standees already has hired its manager and is interviewing cooks, waiters, bartenders and other possible staff. About 50 jobs are expected to be created, with the work force growing to as high as 75 full- and part-time postions during peak season.
