YRC, Compass Minerals lead local stocks

Most regional stocks were directionally challenged Tuesday, falling while the broad stock market averages climbed.

The list of casualties included Sprint, down .3 percent, Kansas City Southern, down .6 percent, UMB Financial, down 1.4 percent and Great Plains Energy, down .7 percent.

On the plus side, Compass Mineals gained 1.7 percent and YRC Worldwide climbed 1.2 percent.

Overall, the Dow Jones industrial average closed at another record high, driven by a surge in materials companies.

The Dow gained almost 60 points to 14,673 Tuesday, an increase of 0.4 percent. The Dow most recently set a record a week ago. It's up 12 percent this year.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose five points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 1,568. That's less than two points from the record high the index reached last week.

The Nasdaq rose 15, or 0.5 percent, to 3,237.

Materials stocks led the gains following a surge in prices for commodities like copper. Cliffs Natural Resources jumped 9 percent.

Three stocks rose for every two that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Trading volume was relatively light at 3.2 billion shares.

The BATS 1000 rose 47.62 points, or 0.27 percent, to close at 17,710.61.

Regional stocks

Capitol Federal Financial fell 9 cents, or 0.75%, to close at $11.89.

Cerner Corp. fell 29 cents, or 0.31%, to close at $93.13.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. fell 12 cents, or 0.30%, to close at $39.76.

Compass Minerals rose $1.32, or 1.72%, to close at $78.18.

DST Systems Inc. fell 25 cents, or 0.36%, to close at $69.31.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. rose 41 cents, or 2.16%, to close at $19.43.

Garmin Ltd. fell 11 cents, or 0.33%, to close at $33.65.

Great Plains Energy fell 16 cents, or 0.68%, to close at $23.26.

H&R Block Inc. fell 3 cents, or 0.11%, to close at $28.30.

Inergy L.P. rose 45 cents, or 2.16%, to close at $21.27.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. fell 6 cents, or 0.16%, to close at $36.40.

Kansas City Southern fell 65 cents, or 0.61%, to close at $105.78.

Layne Christensen Co. fell 12 cents, or 0.59%, to close at $20.30.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. fell $1.85, or 1.78%, to close at $102.06.

Sprint Nextel Corp. fell 2 cents, or 0.32%, to close at $6.28.

UMB Financial Corp. fell 67 cents, or 1.40%, to close at $47.21.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. rose 10 cents, or 0.24%, to close at $42.45.

YRC Worldwide Inc. rose 9 cents, or 1.23%, to close at $7.40.
