Good day for Cerner, Sprint, YRC, DST and Great Plains

Most regional stocks enjoyed good days to start the week Monday, with YRC leading the way.

Shares in the Overland Park-based trucking giant gained nearly 8 percent Monday.

Other regional winners included Sprint, up 1.2%, Kansas City Southern, up 1.6%, Cerner, up 1.4%, and DST, up 1%. Great Plains Energy also finished 1% higher.

The losers included UMB Financial, down .4%, Compass Minerals, down .3%, and Layne Christensen, down .4%.

On Wall Street, stocks closed higher on Wall Street as traders turn their focus to U.S. corporate earnings reports.Aluminum maker Alcoa became the first company in the Dow Jones industrial average to report first-quarter results. The earnings, which came in shortly after the closing bell, were better than analysts were expecting.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 48 points, or 0.3 percent, to end at 14,613 Monday.

Other indexes posted slightly bigger gains. The Standard & Poor's 500 index increased nine points, or 0.6 percent, to 1,563.

The Nasdaq composite rose 18 points, or 0.6 percent, to 3,222.

Two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was light at 2.8 billion shares.

The BATS 1000 rose 119.24 points, or 0.68 percent, to close at 17,662.99.

Regional stocks

Capitol Federal Financial rose 10 cents, or 0.84%, to close at $11.98.

Cerner Corp. rose $1.29, or 1.40%, to close at $93.42.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. rose 20 cents, or 0.50%, to close at $39.88.

Compass Minerals fell 19 cents, or 0.25%, to close at $76.86.

DST Systems Inc. rose 66 cents, or 0.96%, to close at $69.56.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. fell 5 cents, or 0.26%, to close at $19.02.

Garmin Ltd. rose 17 cents, or 0.51%, to close at $33.76.

Great Plains Energy rose 23 cents, or 0.99%, to close at $23.42.

H&R Block Inc. rose 5 cents, or 0.18%, to close at $28.33.

Inergy L.P. rose 21 cents, or 1.02%, to close at $20.82.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. rose 13 cents, or 0.36%, to close at $36.46.

Kansas City Southern rose $1.70, or 1.62%, to close at $106.43.

Layne Christensen Co. fell 9 cents, or 0.44%, to close at $20.42.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. rose 86 cents, or 0.83%, to close at $103.91.

Sprint Nextel Corp. rose 7 cents, or 1.12%, to close at $6.30.

UMB Financial Corp. fell 20 cents, or 0.42%, to close at $47.88.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. rose 39 cents, or 0.93%, to close at $42.35.

YRC Worldwide Inc. rose 52 cents, or 7.66%, to close at $7.31.
