North Kansas City High School was secured on lock-down status shortly after noon today after a person riding in a car nearby was spotted with a gun, an official said.

School officials alerted parents through a text message system of the lock down, which was done as a precaution, said Mary Jo Burton, the North Kansas City School District spokeswoman.

The person with the gun was not a student, she said.
