A rapist with a knife slipped into a Northland woman’s apartment Sunday night after she left to get something from her roommate’s vehicle in the parking lot.

When the 20-year-old woman returned to her second floor apartment in the 8000 block of North Hickory Street, she locked the door behind her, unaware of danger inside.
The rapist ambushed her from behind about 7:20 p.m. and covered her mouth with a gloved hand. With his other hand, he showed her a knife and ordered her to follow his commands.
It was the second stranger rape reported at a Northland apartment complex in March, although police say they have no evidence linking the two attacks, which occurred about three miles apart.
According to police reports, the rapist came from the kitchen area, blindfolded the victim and tied her hands behind her back with a silky cloth. He ordered her to the floor and pulled off her pants. When the rape started, she blacked out. She awoke alone about 8 p.m. and drove to her roommate’s workplace. She waited for her roommate to get off work, then drove to the North Patrol Division station, not far from her apartment, to report the attack.
She did not get a look at the rapist, police said, other than his arms, which were covered.
The attack bore few similarities to a March 8 rape in the 6600 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue, police said.
In that case, a 26-year-old woman was walking to her mother’s apartment when a man wearing a ski mask grabbed her from behind, threatened her with a gun and asked for money. He choked her and dragged to her a concrete patio, where she passed out. She awoke while he was raping her. Afterward, he told her to wait five minutes. Then he ran away.
A neighbor later reported hearing what she thought was arguing at the time of the attack.
Although the attackers in both rapes wore gloves and concealed their identities, police said their behavior, demands and weapons were different.
“We have no reason to link them at this time,” said Sgt. Lionel Colon, who supervises a sex crimes squad.
