KC Southern, Garmin, KC Life , Waddell & Reed start April on a downer

Most regional stocks opened April with a bit of backsliding Monday.

Among the biggest losers, percentage-wise, on the first trading day of the second quarter were Garmin, off 1.4%, Kansas City Southern, down 2.1%, Kansas City Life, off 4.9%, Waddell & Reed, , down 1.8 percent, and YRC, which closed off 2.4%.

The few winners included Sprint, up .6%, and Inergy, up 1.8%.

Oveall Monday, stocks ended slightly lower after an industry group reported that U.S. manufacturing growth cooled in March.The Dow Jones industrial average fell five points, or 0.04 percent, to close at 14,572 Monday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 gave up seven points, 0.5 percent, to 1,562. The S&P 500 closed at an all-time high last week, beating the record it set in October 2007.

The Nasdaq composite fell 28 points, or 0.9 percent, to 3,239.

The Institute for Supply Management said manufacturing grew for the fourth straight month in March, but at a slower rate. Industrial stocks fell the most in the S&P.

Two stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was low at 2.7 billion shares.

The BATS 1000 fell 95.17 points, or 0.54 percent, to close at 17,674.35.

Regional stocks

Capitol Federal Financial fell 9 cents, or 0.75%, to close at $11.98.

Cerner Corp. fell 51 cents, or 0.54%, to close at $94.23.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. fell 13 cents, or 0.32%, to close at $40.70.

Compass Minerals fell 49 cents, or 0.62%, to close at $78.41.

DST Systems Inc. fell 44 cents, or 0.62%, to close at $70.83.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. rose 5 cents, or 0.27%, to close at $18.58.

Garmin Ltd. fell 45 cents, or 1.36%, to close at $32.60.

Great Plains Energy fell 18 cents, or 0.78%, to close at $23.01.

H&R Block Inc. fell 15 cents, or 0.51%, to close at $29.27.

Inergy L.P. rose 37 cents, or 1.81%, to close at $20.80.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. fell $1.91, or 4.88%, to close at $37.22.

Kansas City Southern fell $2.33, or 2.10%, to close at $108.57.

Layne Christensen Co. fell 30 cents, or 1.40%, to close at $21.08.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. rose 26 cents, or 0.25%, to close at $102.70.

Sprint Nextel Corp. rose 4 cents, or 0.64%, to close at $6.25.

UMB Financial Corp. fell 27 cents, or 0.55%, to close at $48.80.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. fell 79 cents, or 1.80%, to close at $42.99.

YRC Worldwide Inc. fell 18 cents, or 2.38%, to close at $7.37.
