Lee Judge cartoons
Lee Judge makes me laugh and think. Keep up the good work, baby.
Common sense fading
Our public schools, which (in my opinion) are now nothing more than liberal indoctrination centers, might try teaching reading, writing, math, true science, the true history of America, values, integrity, honesty and hard work instead of socialism, sex classes, what positions to use behind closed doors, how to get free condoms, multicultural training, diversity and trophies for everyone.
Common sense in America started dying in 2009. In November 2012, she took her last breath.
End gun violence
Its a false notion that the framers wrote the Second Amendment so that armed citizens could fight the government they had created. The most widely held view is that the purpose of the Second Amendment was to ensure that state militias could be maintained for the defense of the state.
A leading Supreme Court case agreed with that theory, and since then the courts have rejected that the Second Amendment conferred an individual right. Recent Supreme Court opinions affirm that the Second Amendment gives law-abiding citizens the right to have firearms in their homes for self-defense but also that gun restrictions are constitutionally permissible and the Second Amendment is not unlimited.
The National Rifle Association and others have used the Second Amendment recklessly and have successfully prevented the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from conducting scientific research into gun violence. Thankfully, the president has lifted this 17-year-old ban.
More than 2,300 people have died as a result of gun violence since the mass killings in Newtown, Conn. It is time to allow a reasonable debate on policies that can work.
Along with 850 mayors, law-enforcement officers and millions of Americans, I demand a plan.
The Second Amendment to the Constitution states, A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. Thats it the entire amendment.
The only stated purpose for bearing arms is as part of a state militia, whose duty is to protect your state. If people want to have a constitutional right to bear arms in any other situation, they need to pass another amendment because this one does not do that.
So lets stop worrying about protecting a nonexistent right and do something about the purpose of the U.S. Constitution as stated in its first paragraph, to establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.
We can work together to make sure we and the children are safe. We can do this by showing the integrity and courage to require background checks on all gun sales, public and private, enforcing gun registration and reserving the possession of military-style weapons for active duty military.
1st Amendment rights
I read letters arguing that what conservatives have been saying about President Barack Obama is vile and hateful. I disagree.
What the conservatives say is legally protected under the First Amendment. It is no worse than what was said about George W. Bush when he was president or is said about members of Congress.
This is still a democratic nation, and everyone should remember that no elected official is above criticism. That includes President Obama.
People can say what they want about Obama and/or Vice President Joe Biden. As long as there are no threats, our Constitution gives individuals that right.
In The Star on March 23, his majesty, Barack Obama, pledged $200 million to Jordan (A1, Welcome, Mr. President) and designated five new national monuments (A2, New sites protected). We cannot find funding to operate the current ones we have.
Meanwhile, sequester cutbacks threaten to close control towers in 149 airports nationwide. If they are unnecessary, why do we have them?
End smoking on trails
I appreciate that we have a nation in which freedom is celebrated, but consideration ought to come alongside it.
I am a runner who struggles with exercise-induced asthma. After fighting through it, mostly successfully, I run daily. I often run on Tomahawk Parkway in Leawood, where many exercise, including those with small children.
These trails are some of Kansas Citys most wonderful attractions. Except for the smokers.
Day after day, I pass grown people who should know better. They smoke cigarettes and even cigars as they slowly walk the same path as avid exercisers.
One small wind blows the smoke smell at my lungs and, worse yet, at the lungs of small children. Its not easy to run far enough off the trail to avoid it.
Its a surefire way to ruin a beautiful run, especially when I pass them multiple times as I loop around hacking.
I suppose its legal to smoke in a public park. But maybe it shouldnt be on family-friendly exercise trails.
The inconsideration displayed by these people is a shame to our beautiful community. I urge the city of Leawood to ponder a restriction on smoking on the trails themselves.
My lungs would appreciate it.
Reduce high gas price
Our politicians in Washington, D.C., are arguing over gun control and what should be done about it. The outcome, regardless of what happens with it, unfortunately wont make a difference in the future of gun murders.
Millions of guns are already in the publics possession. Congress and the Senate should work on controlling gas prices. This might not save lives, but it would help millions of Americans like you and me trying to survive in this economy were living in.
High gas prices drive up the cost of almost everything we purchase. Hey, Washington. How about some help?
I am so very tired of being told that supposedly the richest nation in the world is broke.
Here is a partial list of the thousands of companies that, despite raking in billions in profits, paid no net federal income taxes: Mattel, Corning, General Electric, Verizon Communications, Boeing, Bank of America, Exxon Mobil, Citigroup and Chevron.
In addition to paying no taxes, several of these companies actually received subsidies and rebates from our government, and this is all legal. Is not anybody else outraged by this?
Many of the owners of these corporations reside in and reap the benefits of this wonderful country and pay no taxes. We need to enact laws to ensure they pay their fair share.
Beauty all around
Beauty is good for us, and it is all around. Come away from the rush of our busy world and feel the joy of beauty.
Our body responds wonderfully to beauty. Sleep is beautiful, and we are refreshed by it.
Beautiful food satisfies our hunger. Imagine the joy felt over pancakes, spare ribs or hot soup.
Our goodness is seen in responses to beauty. The tiny little wren and its song speak of happiness and beauty.
The needed rain speaks of beauty as it feeds the soil. How beautiful is the eagle as it soars majestically.
And just think of our response as we view the beautiful sunset. And beauty is meant to heal as we see the mother loving the child or the beautiful work of hospice as it eases the pain.
When the spoken word is what we need to hear, how beautiful it is.
When the beautiful voice of the soprano touches the high note, we have happy goose bumps, as well as when the artist painted that picture to speak of beauty and kindness.
