Closing Bell | Sprint, KC Southern, Cerner turn in good days

A record-setting day on Wall Street helped lift most regional stocks too.

The biggest movers were Sprint, up 2.8 percent; Kansas City Southern, up 2.9 percent, and Cerner, up 2.2 percent. Other notables included H&R Block , up .9 percent, Great Plains Energy, up 1.3 percent, and DST, up .9 percent.

Relatively few regional stocks closed lower, although YRC fell 2.3 percent, and Layne Christensen dropped 2.6 percent.

Overall the big story of the day was the Standard & Poor's 500 index, which closed at a record high. It beat the mark it set in October 2007, a year before the peak of the financial crisis.

The S&P rose six points to 1,569, a gain of 0.4 percent, beating its previous record by four points. The index is still shy of its all-time trading high of 1,576.

The Dow Jones industrial average, which beat its own 2007 record three weeks ago, rose 52 points, or 0.4 percent, to 14,578.

The Nasdaq composite rose 11, or 0.3 percent, to 3,267.

Nearly two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange.

Volume was relatively light at 3.2 billion shares. Markets will be closed for Good Friday.

The BATS 1000 rose 84.22 points, or 0.48 percent, to close at 17,769.52.

Regional stocks

Capitol Federal Financial fell 1 cents, or 0.08%, to close at $12.07.

Cerner Corp. rose $2.06, or 2.22%, to close at $94.74.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. rose 11 cents, or 0.27%, to close at $40.83.

Compass Minerals rose 45 cents, or 0.57%, to close at $78.90.

DST Systems Inc. rose 64 cents, or 0.91%, to close at $71.27.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. fell 50 cents, or 2.63%, to close at $18.53.

Garmin Ltd. rose 8 cents, or 0.24%, to close at $33.05.

Great Plains Energy rose 29 cents, or 1.27%, to close at $23.19.

H&R Block Inc. rose 26 cents, or 0.89%, to close at $29.42.

Inergy L.P. fell 12 cents, or 0.58%, to close at $20.43.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. fell 5 cents, or 0.13%, to close at $39.13.

Kansas City Southern rose $3.16, or 2.93%, to close at $110.90.

Layne Christensen Co. fell 57 cents, or 2.60%, to close at $21.38.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. fell 31 cents, or 0.30%, to close at $102.44.

Sprint Nextel Corp. rose 17 cents, or 2.81%, to close at $6.21.

UMB Financial Corp. rose 10 cents, or 0.20%, to close at $49.07.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. rose 37 cents, or 0.85%, to close at $43.78.

YRC Worldwide Inc. fell 18 cents, or 2.33%, to close at $7.55.
