Updated: 2013-03-27T05:27:17Z

Jackson County deputies took one man into custody Tuesday night after he crashed a van into a ravine behind a northeast Kansas City power plant.

A sheriff’s deputy noticed a white van driving erratically about 8:20 p.m. near Interstate 435 and Truman Road, said Ronda Montgomery, Jackson County sheriff’s spokeswoman. While the deputy was conducting a car stop, the van’s driver took off driving north on Interstate 435.

The van exited on Front Street and drove through a gate at the Kansas City Power & Light Hawthorn power plant, Montgomery said. Taken into custody was a 21-year-old man who claimed to be homeless. A passenger in the van was released, said Montgomery, who added that drugs and alcohol were thought to be involved in the incident.
