I attended the second- and third-round games of the NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament at the Sprint Center during the weekend.
Needless to say, the weather, particularly the snowstorm Saturday night, could have been a tremendous deterrent for hoops fans.
Fortunately, Kansas City was up to the task. I would like to compliment all those workers who toiled for the many hours required to remove the snow from the Power & Light District, allowing thousands of basketball enthusiasts to enjoy March Madness in person.
Your efforts have not been taken for granted, and Kansas City, once again, demonstrated why it is the mecca of basketball.
KUs NCAA win
Sorry, Roy (3-25, A1, Oh, how sweet). But its not about the money.
My elderly friend was losing her vision along with her interest in leaving her home until the evening she accepted my invitation to dinner at her favorite place, Leona Yarbroughs.
After enjoying our meal and as I led Roberta through the restaurant to leave, she suddenly stopped beside a booth and said, I hear Walt Bodines voice!
Indeed, it was Walt, and he could not have been more gracious and unhurried as he chatted with my friend. Their contact was brief, but the excitement of that event was lasting.
Walt Bodine was a Kansas City legend, and we will not see the likes of him again.
Every year the Kansas City Royals start a new season in Kauffman Stadium with all sorts of hope and promise. The home opener almost always sells out. However, it is usually the only time that will ever happen, unless Kansas City hosts the All-Star Game every year.
When the talks about the renovations started, there was talk about building a new stadium near or in downtown . The next time the Royals consider evaluating the stadium, they should strongly consider moving downtown because of the gained attendance, which would bring in more revenue.
This move would allow downtown to have more life than just the Power & Light District or when the next big show is at the Midland Theater or the Sprint Center. The people of the city would go to games downtown, and it would make for a very baseball-like atmosphere.
The increase in fan support at games would hopefully increase the popularity of the sport in the city and give some people something to look forward to in their lives.
Gun-control advocates are not learning. The old laws didnt work but not because they did not go far enough.
The target (pun intended) should be educating good kids who use drugs and gangbangers fighting for the turf to sell to them. Drugs cause more gun deaths than high-capacity magazines or gun-show guns.
Ban movies with guns
Why not start with the movie industry and stop showing movies with guns? They have to be a contributing factor in these horrible real-life shootings.
Killing bugs, people
In the 1970s, a chemist friend for a multinational producer of agricultural products put the reality of the danger of chemical insecticides this way: If it can kill them (bugs), it can kill you.
Flash forward to the genetically modified organism seeds of the 21st century, some of which include DNA that has been engineered to kill insects, thus eliminating the need to spray.
How does this magic work? Well, apparently the changes in the makeup of the seed, and thus the plant it becomes, cause the stomachs of invasive insects to burst.
However, there may be a problem. Concurrent with the increased use of genetically modified organisms in the production of corn and soybeans, there seems to be a rise in food-related illnesses such as celiac disease. Studies seem to indicate that tiny perforations are occurring in the stomach walls of people.
Theyre caused by something like minute explosions. This leakage of food material outside the alimentary canal leads to an autoimmune response by the human body and is the source of some food allergies.
If it can kill them, it can kill you.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Obama no leader
Watching the growing divide in our nation, Im becoming concerned that were going to fail as Rome did. This divide is caused by lack of a real leader in the Oval Office.
We havent had a decent leader since President Ronald Reagans first term. Before Reagan, we had Franklin Roosevelt and John Kennedy, with about four terms of weaker leaders between.
Since Reagans first term, weve had about eight terms without real leadership. History has shown that a lack of leadership leads to anarchy, and out of anarchy will come a charismatic leader who will brutally gain control, as Adolf Hitler did.
Dictators gain power by preying on the ignorance of the public. You can easily see such ignorance by watching Jaywalking on Jay Leno.
When times are easy, people relax, enjoy life and dont pay attention. When times are hard, they dont see it coming and dont know what to do.
The world-renowned poker player, Doyle Brunson, when asked what advice he would give a new player, replied: Pay attention. This is the best two-word advice any person could get. Please, everyone, pay attention, use logic and think for yourself.
Fight climate change
All Kansas counties but one have been declared disaster areas because of the extreme drought this past year. 2012 was the hottest year ever recorded in the contiguous U.S., with a 55.3-degree average breaking the previous record, set in 1998, by a full degree Fahrenheit.
How much evidence do we need that its time to address climate change? The longer we wait, the more painful the consequences.
The good news is we can take decisive action now. James Hansen, one of the worlds leading climate scientists, suggests implementing a carbon fee and dividend legislation.
This solution would place a fee on carbon at its source and then distribute the collected funds back to the American people on an equitable basis. Seventy percent of households would actually receive more in their monthly bonus check than they would pay for the increased cost of energy.
With this legislation, we could become a world leader in the green industry and ensure that we have pristine air and water for generations to come.
America is a can-do nation. Lets roll up our sleeves and get this job done for this and future generations.
Im in total agreement with the people regarding remembering all four of the Americans killed in Benghazi. Our own then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made questionable statements.
I guarantee it made a big difference to the families of those brave men, Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods. It should make a difference to all Americans.
Why arent businesses required to have an address on their buildings that is clearly visible from the street?
Many times Ive been looking for an address and couldnt see one on several buildings.
Humane to animals
We do not kill the homeless who are not able to be rehabilitated as a way to solve the homeless problem.
We do not kill wildlife because it cannot make someone a good pet.
Trap-neuter-release does work, and it is the only humane way to solve the feral cat situation.
