Park Hill School Board election, 1-year term

Incumbent Chris Seufert, who was appointed in July 2012, faces opponents Bobbi Woodward and Melinda Hardin for a one-year seat on the Park Hill school board on the April 2 ballot.

The candidates’ top priorities include school safety, keeping the district financially stable and handling the district’s changing demographics.

All the candidates spoke to the need to keep classroom environments from becoming stagnated. They all agreed teachers need to stay connected to the ever-changing world of technology to makes students as prepared as possible.

Chris Seufert

Age: 39

Address: 6502 N.W. Sioux Drive, Parkville

Occupation: Platte County assistant prosecutor

Education: Law degree from Duke University Law School; bachelor’s degree in political science and communication studies from Macalester College.

Public experience: Appointed to the school board in July 2012; Platte County assistant prosecutor since 2006; member of the Platte County Bar Association since 2012.

Stances: Seufert said his top priorities are academic achievement, student safety and transparency and accountability. He said it’s important that the district strive to provide the public with as much information as possible. Seufert also said it’s important technology be incorporated into Park Hill classrooms.

Bobbi Woodward

Age: 41

Address: 8419 N. Barberry Ave., Kansas City

Occupation: Quality reviewer for the U.S. government; formerly worked in the disability field

Education: Master’s degree in psychology from the University of St. Mary; bachelor’s degree in psychology from Northwest Missouri State University

Public experience: N/A

Stances: Woodward wants teacher input on the challenges they face and what they believe works well in the classroom. She said as technology will continue to play an integral role in the district’s success, it’s important that teachers have the necessary resources. She also said one of her priorities would be ensuring that proper safety measures are in place.

Melinda Hardin

Age: 41

Address: 6081 N.W. 80th Terrace, Kansas City

Occupation: Small business owner of an entertainment group

Education: Graduated from Liberty High School.

Public experience: N/A

Stances: One of Hardin’s main concern is dealing with the changing demographics within the Park Hill school district. She said the district needs to get a more accurate read and handle on these changes so it can better address the needs of families and students. She would like the district to be more “ahead of the curve” when it comes to issues of learning environments.
