Sprint, H&R Block, Cerner, Ferrellgas finish week on positive note

Most regional stocks closed higher Friday, with Sprint, Cerner, Ferrellgas and H&R Block among the leaders.

Shares in Sprint rose 8 cents or 1.32 percent. Ferrellgas ended the day up 57 cents, 2.9 percent, while Block gained 42 cents or 1.5 percent. Cerner closed up 2.8 percent.

Among banks stocks, both Commerce and UMB Financial closed higher, while Capitol Federal fell.

Other losers on Friday: YRC, down 2.8 percent; Great Plains, down .2 percent, and Compass Minerals, down .6 percent.

On Wall Street, U.S. stock markets closed higher, bolstered by strong earnings from companies like Nike.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 90.4 points, or 0.6 percent, to 14,512 at the close of trading on Friday.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index rose 11 points, or 0.7 percent, to 1,556. The Nasdaq rose 22 points, or 0.7 percent, 3,245.

Nike reported a surge in quarterly profit, and its stock was the top gainer in the S&P 500. Tiffany topped earnings predictions, boosted by demand from customers in Asia.

Advancing stocks led declining stocks on the New York Stock Exchange, with advancers totaling 1,859 and decliners at 1,090.

The BATS 1000 rose 109.85 points, or 0.63 percent, to close at 17,603.43.

Regional stocks

Capitol Federal Financial fell 3 cents, or 0.25%, to close at $11.93.

Cerner Corp. rose $2.52, or 2.78%, to close at $93.09.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. rose 30 cents, or 0.75%, to close at $40.36.

Compass Minerals fell 45 cents, or 0.58%, to close at $76.75.

DST Systems Inc. rose 4 cents, or 0.06%, to close at $69.37.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. rose 57 cents, or 2.93%, to close at $20.05.

Garmin Ltd. rose 10 cents, or 0.30%, to close at $33.25.

Great Plains Energy fell 4 cents, or 0.18%, to close at $22.73.

H&R Block Inc. rose 42 cents, or 1.51%, to close at $28.32.

Inergy L.P. fell 29 cents, or 1.40%, to close at $20.48.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. rose 18 cents, or 0.46%, to close at $38.97.

Kansas City Southern rose 97 cents, or 0.91%, to close at $107.56.

Layne Christensen Co. rose 3 cents, or 0.14%, to close at $22.00.

O’Reilly Automotive Inc. rose 49 cents, or 0.48%, to close at $103.26.

Sprint Nextel Corp. rose 8 cents, or 1.32%, to close at $6.14.

UMB Financial Corp. rose 34 cents, or 0.71%, to close at $48.47.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. rose 24 cents, or 0.56%, to close at $43.09.

YRC Worldwide Inc. fell 24 cents, or 2.78%, to close at $8.38.
