Royals present minor-league organizational awards

SURPRISE, Ariz. — The Royals announced and presented their minor-league organizational awards Tuesday morning in a courtyard ceremony prior to their pre-game workouts.

The top two recipients, outfielder Wil Myers and right-hander Jake Odorizzi as the George Brett Hitter of the Year and Paul Splittorff Pitcher of the Year, were not present.

Myers and Odorizzi were traded Dec. 9 to Tampa Bay in the big off-season deal that returned pitchers James Shields and Wade Davis along with infielder Elliot Johnson.

Tampa Bay also received pitcher Mike Montgomery and third baseman Patrick Leonard. Myers and Odorizzi will receive their awards in the mail.

The Brett and Splittorff awards date to 2008.

Previous Brett winners: first baseman Kila Ka’aihue in 2008, outfielder David Lough in 2009, third baseman Mike Moustakas in 2010 and second baseman Johnny Giavotella in 2011.

Previous Splittorff winners: Dan Cortes in 2008, Montgomery in 2009, John Lamb in 2010 and Kelvin Herrera in 2011.

Other awards:

Class A Wilmington outfielder Brett Eibner received the Frank White Defensive Player of the Year award. It was presented by outfielder Alex Gordon, a Gold Glove recipient in 2010 and 2011.

Short-season Burlington outfielder Terrence Gore was the Willie Wilson Baserunner of the Year. Wilson presented the award.

Class AA Northwest Arkansas shortstop Alex McClure was the Mike Sweeney Award recipient, which recognizes a player’s contributions on and off the field. Sweeney presented the award.

Dominican Academy field coordinator Victor Baez received the Dick Howser Award for outstanding contributions to the Player Development Department. Brett and John Wathan presented the award.

Colin Gonzalez was picked as winner of the Art Stewart Award, which recognizes an outstanding scout. Gonzalez is the area scout in Southern California. He was unable to attend and will receive his award later this season.

Kevin Linton received the Matt Minker Award as the organization’s outstanding minor-league affiliate employee. He works as the director for community affairs at Class A Wilmington. The award was presented by Jack Minker.
