Weston Board of Aldermen election, Ward 1

Communication with City Hall is a priority for both incumbent Kent Stelljes and opponent Scott Low in the April 2 election to represent Ward 1 on the Weston Board of Aldermen.

Stelljes said he hopes to improve communication with residents through a city and police website. Low said his first move as alderman would be to reach out to the merchants of Weston.

The Weston City Council is made up of a mayor and two representatives from two wards. The winner will join Patrick Farnan as a Ward I representative.

Occupation: Owns Flashback Restoration, an auto restoration company

Education: Graduated from Derby, Kan., high school; attended trade school

Public experience: Two years at the Weston Chamber of Commerce

Stances: His top priorities are tourism, streets and infrastructure. He would like to see better streets and sidewalks, which he would like to pay for using taxes generated through commerce. His first step as alderman would be to work on the bond between City Hall and local merchants. He said he’d cut expenses before raising taxes.

Kent Stelljes

Age: 34

Address: 215 Walnut St.

Occupation: Registered respiratory therapist at Children’s Mercy Hospital

Education: Graduated from West Platte; certified respiratory therapist from Concord College

Public experience: Serving two-year term as Ward 1 alderman

Stances: Stelljes said his priorities are public safety and keeping the city fiscally sound. He also wants to finish the Weston city and police website to make communication with residents more efficient. He said the biggest challenge for Weston is bringing in more residents, which is why he would continue to support the Make It Happen campaign.
