Kansas City police are trying to determine if anything is missing from the home of a 70-year-old woman found murdered in her bed Sunday morning.

Police declined to release the cause of death for Marise Barrett but said the killer may have gotten into her home through a broken back window. She lived with her husband in the 4400 block of E. 33rd Street.

Barrett’s husband, who is legally blind and disabled, apparently slept through the attack in a separate bedroom.

He told police he tried to wake his wife about 11 a.m. Sunday then realized she was dead. There were no signs of sexual assault, police said.

Barrett had just celebrated her 70th birthday Saturday with close relatives. She used a wheelchair to get around but was not confined to it, police said.

Neighbors did not see or hear anything suspicious overnight, which is when police believe she was killed.

Barrett had several children and grandchildren and was well-liked by neighbors. Her death stunned relatives.

“I’m just kind of in a fog,” said Fannie Thompson, Barrett’s sister. “I didn’t sleep last night. I can’t eat. I just left her son’s house and he’s no better off than I am.”

Anyone with information should call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (474-8477).
