Anything goes for prom this year as long as it sparkles and shows a little skin, said Ashley Litton, owner of Sassy Chic Boutique in Leawood.

Despite the rainbow of glittering gowns at the boutique, Litton said that black is the most popular hue for prom 2013. Runners-up are gold, aqua and white, which aren’t the right shades for some skin tones, she said. She has a sweet spot for periwinkle but knows it’s not for everyone. Navy, red, pink and coral are better bets, she said.

“Sheer illusion details, sequins, hi-low hems, chunky stones and anything backless are big,” said Litton who prefers long, modest gowns on most girls, as do their mothers. “I see a lot of mother/daughter fights in here some days.”
