Top-seeded Fort Hays advances to MIAA men’s semifinals

Top-seeded Fort Hays State kicked off March Madness in Kansas City on Thursday with a 79-60 victory over Missouri Southern in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament at Municipal Auditorium.

Missouri Southern took an 11-6 lead with Marquis Addison scoring nine of the Lions’ first 11 points. But Fort Hays battled back for a 36-31 halftime lead behind Ben Congiusta’s four three-pointers. He finished with 17 points.

The Tigers were led by Craig Nicholson, who scored 19 points and had seven assists. Carson Konrade scored 15 and Lance Russell added 12. Addison led the Lions with 13 points and six rebounds.

Fort Hays will play Northwest Missouri at noon Saturday in the semifinals.

Northwest Missouri 69, Northeastern State 65

Dillon Starzl led Northwest Missouri with 25 points of nine of 12 shooting and sealed the Bearcats’ victory with the game’s final two free throws.

Northwest shot 71 percent in the first half and led by as many as 14 points in the second before Northeastern began a comeback. Bryton Hobbs led the RiverHawks with 23 points.
