Police spokesman Sgt. Brad Caldwell described the shooting in the 15800 block of West 148th Terrace as an “aggravated battery/suicide.” Caldwell declined to discuss the circumstances leading to the shootings but said that police have determined that no one else was involved.
“We’re not looking for anybody else,” Caldwell said Wednesday afternoon.
Police were called to a report of an armed disturbance at 10:22 p.m. Tuesday, with police dispatchers saying that a woman had locked herself in an upstairs bedroom and that her mother and father were downstairs.
The woman told authorities she had heard two shots.
Caldwell confirmed Wednesday the presence of that person.
“There was another adult female in the house,” Caldwell said. “She’s been interviewed, but she did not witness the shooting.”
Emergency crews found Tammy J. Johnston, 51, with a gunshot wound to the thigh. They also found Donald J. Johnston, 52, dead at the scene.
Tammy Johnston was in serious condition at a hospital, police said.
According to Johnson County District Court records, Tammy Johnston filed for divorce against her husband in October 2010. But after an initial series of orders were entered within a week, no further action was taken. The case was dismissed “for lack of prosecution” in September 2011.
