After a would-be robber punched a Chinese food delivery driver in the face Sunday night, the driver punched back and chased the robber and an accomplice.

One of the robbers fired two gunshots into the ground to convince the driver to give up the chase.

The failed holdup occurred about 10 p.m. in the 3900 block of Warwick Boulevard.

It all started when the driver was trying to deliver food to an apartment. The resident answered the door but said she didn’t place the order.

As the driver returned to his car, two men confronted him. One had a gun. They asked for his phone and his cash.

The driver dropped his phone, but then bent over to pick it up. One of the robbers punched him in the face. The victim then punched the assailant in the face and chased him.

The assailant and his partner ran toward the apartment complex as one fired two gunshots to scare off the driver.

The driver got back into his car and returned to the North China Restaurant at 3805 Broadway, where he reported the holdup attempt.
