Teen accused of stabbing in dispute over woman

Clay County prosecutors on Monday accused a 17-year-old of stabbing another teen Sunday in a dispute over a woman.

Katerius J. Hayes, 19, collapsed in the snow and died after the 7:15 p.m. assault near Northeast Parvin Road and Bellaire Avenue.

Prosecutors charged Juvon Benders with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. Prosecutors wanted to review the medical examiner’s report and receive other information before considering a murder charge.

Police said Hayes had been involved in a serious relationship with a woman who later dated Benders. The woman recently broke up with Benders to rekindle her relationship with Hayes, police said.

Benders was driving near Parvin Estates on Sunday when he spotted Hayes, according to court records. Benders pulled over, confronted Hayes in the street and stabbed him, the records allege.

Benders later surrendered at a Northland police station.
