AMES, Iowa — Kansas coach Bill Self will go for his 500th career victory tonight at Iowa State. Self, who is 499-162 in 20 seasons, would tie former Temple coach John Chaney as the ninth-fastest coach to 500 victories. Two former Kansas coaches (Phog Allen and Roy Williams) and two former KU players (Adolph Rupp and Dean Smith) are also on the list.

Unlike many names on this list, Self started at the bottom, taking his first coaching job at lowly Oral Roberts before moving on to stops at Tulsa, Illinois and, finally, Kansas. As Self, 50, prepares to join the exclusive 500-victory club, here’s a look at how he got there.

Most losses: Just one school has managed to beat Self eight times in his career. That school? His alma mater, Oklahoma State, which is 8-11 all-time against Self.
Best winning percentage (minimum 10 games): Self is 17-0 all-time against Colorado.
Worst winning percentage (minimum 10 games): Self is 4-6 (40 percent) against Michigan State; (minimum five games): Self is 3-5 against Arizona (37.5 percent).
Record against the Blue Bloods: Self has compiled a winning record (9-8) against four of the winningest and tradition-rich programs in the country: Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky and UCLA. That mark includes a 2-3 mark during last year’s Final Four season.
