I-70 reopens in western Kansas

Updated: 2013-02-22T04:11:28Z

Interstate 70 in western Kansas has reopened to travelers.

The eastbound lanes between Goodland and Salina were reopened about 8:30 p.m. and the westbound lanes between Salina and Hays were reopened about 9 p.m.

The highway had been closed earlier in the day due to the snow.

The Kansas National Guard assigned 16 soldiers in eight Humvees to patrol the highway searching for stranded travelers to take them to the nearest town with available hotel rooms.

Officials emphasize that winter driving conditions continue to exist and Kansas Department of Transportation crews are still working to clear the highways.
