Schools adopt stricter safety measures

The Harrisonville School District has taken several steps to enhance the safety of students and staff.

One strategy is to minimize traffic in and out of buildings, so parents are being asked to avoid dropping off items for their children unless they’re really needed.

Other measures:

• The district is emailing the parents of absent students each morning. This is in addition to calls that go out at night.

• All visitors are required to show photo IDs, which are cross-checked with school records. If the visitor is not listed as a parent or emergency contact, the primary parent will be contacted before the visitor can meet with the student. The same rule applies for anyone attending assemblies and other events.

• Visitors who join students for lunch will wait in the office area until lunch time and return directly to the office, rather than accompany students to their next activity.

• Plans are being made to equip schools with systems that will keep visitors out until they are “buzzed in.”
