Day in camp: Pitchers get a workout

Updated: 2013-02-15T23:28:39Z

Friday was the first official day of workouts for the full squad, but the Royals didn't hit the fields until late morning after a team meeting.

After the team stretch, it was time for the first group of pitchers to throw 10 minutes of BP to their major-league teammates, and I'm not gonna lie: There was some huffing and puffing going on. Won't name names -- that's what spring training is all about, right? Wade Davis, who is already slotted as the No. 4 starter, was glad he was throwing behind a screen after Mike Moustakas hit a screamer near his head.

Once the pitchers got done with their work, it was time for team baserunning. And who better to start baserunning drills than Wheels himself -- Billy Butler. He's not exactly graceful, or fast, but hey, scoreboard: Billy's an All-Star. He has other gifts.

Manager Ned Yost was pleased with how things went Friday -- everyone got their work in and no one got hurt.

"Everybody got a bunch of swings, and the pitchers did great," Yost said. "We got everything accomplished that we set out to accomplish."
