A woman nearly lost her life Thursday morning over a few dollars’ worth of scrap metal.
She was scavenging in a trash bin about 4:45 a.m. when a garbage truck driver arrived and lifted the trash bin’s contents into his truck, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said.
“They dumped the trash out and she went with it,” the supervisor said.
The driver said he was preparing to press a button to compact the garbage when the woman’s sister drove up and stopped him. Meanwhile, the woman was yelling for help inside the truck.
Firefighters arrived and dug her out by hand.
“She was lucky they didn’t turn the blades on yet and crush her,” the supervisor said.
