Garmin, Waddell & Reed finish 1 percent higher

In a day of small gains and losses, Garmin and Waddell & Reed managed to end 1 percent higher Thursday.

There were no big story lines for regional stocks — even Sprint, the largest area public company tacked on a 1-cent gain on the day.

Among the losers, DST fell 0.7 percent, and Great Plains Energy also lost 0.7 percent..

Stocks ended little changed on Wall Street as a slowdown in Europe’s economy overshadowed an encouraging report on the U.S. jobs market.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 9.52 points, or 0.07 percent, to close at 13,973.39.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 edged up o1.05 points to 1,521.38 The Nasdaq also rose1.78 poiints, or 0.06 percent to 3,198. 66

The BATS 1000 rose 6.60 points, or 0.04 percent, to close at 17,203.05.

Gloomy news out of Europe weighed on the market. Germany’s economy shrank late last year, deepening a recession across the region.

Ketchup maker H.J. Heinz soared 20 percent after agreeing to be bought by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway. Whole Foods slumped 10 percent after the grocery chain cut its earnings forecast.

Rising and falling stocks were evenly split on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was slightly higher than the recent average, 3.7 billion shares.

Regional stocks

Capitol Federal Financial fell 1 cents, or 0.08%, to close at $11.92.

Cerner Corp. rose 28 cents, or 0.32%, to close at $87.90.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. rose 2 cents, or 0.05%, to close at $38.79.

Compass Minerals rose 10 cents, or 0.13%, to close at $74.49.

DST Systems Inc. fell 47 cents, or 0.69%, to close at $67.55.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. fell 2 cents, or 0.10%, to close at $19.90.

Garmin Ltd. rose 41 cents, or 1.06%, to close at $38.97.

Great Plains Energy fell 15 cents, or 0.68%, to close at $21.92.

H&R Block Inc. rose 2 cents, or 0.08%, to close at $24.86.

Inergy L.P. fell 14 cents, or 0.70%, to close at $20.00.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. fell 8 cents, or 0.21%, to close at $37.76.

Kansas City Southern rose 25 cents, or 0.26%, to close at $97.61.

Layne Christensen Co. rose 18 cents, or 0.79%, to close at $22.98.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. fell 32 cents, or 0.31%, to close at $101.68.

Sprint Nextel Corp. rose 1 cents, or 0.17%, to close at $5.87.

UMB Financial Corp. rose 2 cents, or 0.04%, to close at $45.78.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. rose 43 cents, or 1.02%, to close at $42.41.

YRC Worldwide Inc. fell 2 cents, or 0.30%, to close at $6.72.
