Sprint gains 2 percent, UMB, YRC, H&R Block up 1 percent

Shares in Sprint advanced more than 2 percent Tuesday, leading a small charge among regional stocks in an otherwise quiet day.

Sprint, the region’s largest public company gained 12 cents on the day.

UMB Financial, YRC Worldwide and H&R Block finished up 1.2 percent, while Great Plains Energy gained 1.1 percent.

Among losers, Garmin fell 0.5 percent and O’Reilly Automotive dropped 0.8 percent.

Overall, the Dow closed at its highest level of the year, coming within one percent of its record reached in October 2007.

The latest gain was powered by impressive results from two big consumer brands, Avon and luxury clothing maker Michael Kors.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 47.46 points, or 0.34 percent, to close at 14,018.70, putting it within 146 points of its record high of 14,164.

Avon surged 20 percent after its quarterly loss was less than analysts feared. Michael Kors rose 9 percent after its results impressed investors.

The Dow surged at the start of the year, logging its best January in almost two decades.

Two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Trading was lighter than the recent average at 3.3 billion shares.

The BATS 1000 rose 36.31 points, or 0.21 percent, to close at 17,176.98. The Nasdaq fell 5.51 points, or 0.17 percent, to close at 3,186.49.

The S&P 500 rose 2.42 points, or 0.16 percent , to close at 1,519.43.

Regional movers

Capitol Federal Financial was unchanged at $11.87.

Cerner Corp. rose 5 cents, or 0.06%, to close at $87.55.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. rose 17 cents, or 0.44%, to close at $38.59.

Compass Minerals rose 15 cents, or 0.20%, to close at $74.52.

DST Systems Inc. rose 43 cents, or 0.64%, to close at $67.80.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. rose 21 cents, or 1.08%, to close at $19.70.

Garmin Ltd. fell 19 cents, or 0.50%, to close at $37.68.

Great Plains Energy rose 24 cents, or 1.10%, to close at $21.99.

H&R Block Inc. rose 29 cents, or 1.19%, to close at $24.74.

Inergy L.P. rose 17 cents, or 0.87%, to close at $19.82.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. rose 13 cents, or 0.35%, to close at $37.56.

Kansas City Southern rose 51 cents, or 0.53%, to close at $95.87.

Layne Christensen Co. rose 34 cents, or 1.52%, to close at $22.70.

O’Reilly Automotive Inc. fell 84 cents, or 0.82%, to close at $101.56.

Sprint Nextel Corp. rose 12 cents, or 2.07%, to close at $5.91.

UMB Financial Corp. rose 54 cents, or 1.20%, to close at $45.58.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. rose 9 cents, or 0.22%, to close at $41.40.

YRC Worldwide Inc. rose 8 cents, or 1.20%, to close at $6.75.
