Chemical spills at SM East in Johnson County

Updated: 2013-02-12T02:39:03Z

Firefighters, police and a hazardous materials team responded today to Shawnee Mission East High School for a chemical spill.

Officials said triiodide had spilled inside a refrigerator in the Prairie Village school’s chemistry lab storage area. The substance is mild, but unstable.

Because the spill was contained, crews decided to allow school to conclude before starting cleanup.

School officials stressed that at no time were students or faculty in danger.
