Monday provided little drama for regional stocks, with only a handful showing a pulse.

Among the winners, Waddell & Reed rose 1 percent, O’Reilly Automotive gained 0.8 percent, UMB Financial was up 0.9 percent, and Layne Christensen advanced 0.7 percent.

Of the losers, YRC Worldwide gave up about half of Friday’s gain, finishing down 2.1 percent. Cerner lost 0.7 percent and Garmin fell 0.6 percent.

Overall, stocks drifted lower in thin trading Monday, pulling the Standard & Poor’s 500 index back from a five-year high.

The broad-market index edged up slightly last week, enough to put it at its highest level since November 2007.

With little in the way of market-moving news, the Dow Jones industrial average closed down 21.73 points to close at 13,971.24 on Monday. The S&P 500 slipped one point to 1,517.01 and the Nasdaq composite slipped two points to 3,192.01.

BATS 1000 fell 10.97 points, or 0.06 percent, to close at 17,140.67.

Apple’s stock gained following reports over the weekend that the tech giant is developing a wristwatch-like gadget, a smart watch.

Fewer than three stocks fell for every two that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Trading volume was thin at 2.7 billion shares versus the recent average of 3.5 billion.

Regional stocks

Capitol Federal Financial rose 13 cents, or 1.06%, to close at $11.87.

Cerner Corp. fell 60 cents, or 0.68%, to close at $87.50.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. rose 7 cents, or 0.18%, to close at $38.42.

Compass Minerals rose 2 cents, or 0.03%, to close at $74.37.

DST Systems Inc. fell 31 cents, or 0.46%, to close at $67.37.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. rose 7 cents, or 0.36%, to close at $19.49.

Garmin Ltd. fell 21 cents, or 0.55%, to close at $37.87.

Great Plains Energy rose 8 cents, or 0.37%, to close at $21.75.

H&R Block Inc. rose 5 cents, or 0.20%, to close at $24.45.

Inergy L.P. rose 30 cents, or 1.55%, to close at $19.65.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. fell 24 cents, or 0.64%, to close at $37.43.

Kansas City Southern rose 27 cents, or 0.28%, to close at $95.36.

Layne Christensen Co. rose 15 cents, or 0.68%, to close at $22.36.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. rose 83 cents, or 0.82%, to close at $102.40.

Sprint Nextel Corp. rose 2 cents, or 0.35%, to close at $5.79.

UMB Financial Corp. rose 40 cents, or 0.90%, to close at $45.04.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. rose 41 cents, or 1.00%, to close at $41.31.

YRC Worldwide Inc. fell 14 cents, or 2.06%, to close at $6.67.
