• Key Play: Rodney McGruder made a three-pointer to give K-State a 61-52 lead that was too much for Iowa State to overcome.

Focus on Spradling

Will Spradling only made one shot against Iowa State and finished with three points, but it’s hard to say he had a quiet game. Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said he was so worried about the junior guard repeating the 15-point effort he had at Hilton Coliseum earlier this season, that the Cyclones’ defense centered on stopping him.

“Spradling, I thought, was the guy who hurt us the most the first time,” Hoiberg said. “He made four threes. We felt if he got loose we wouldn’t have a chance to win this game. We really worked on chasing him the last few days in practice.”

That opened up space for other players, who took advantage. McGruder, Angel Rodriguez, Gipson and Irving all finished in double figures.

• K-State players down-played the fact that they are playing their in-state rival with first-place on the line Monday. “It seems like people try to amp up that Kansas game more than any other game,” McGruder said. “It’s just any other game. I feel like we are prepared. We were prepared today. We are going to be prepared on Monday.” Added Rodriguez: “It is a big rivalry and everything, but I don’t think they would make a big deal out of it if we were going to play another team. It’s just another game. We have to treat it like any other.”

• Jordan Henriquez is in a slump. The Wildcats’ senior forward started against Iowa State, but didn’t do much of anything. He fumbled two passes on his way to the basket and missed badly on a jumper early, and barely played after that. Weber decided to use Gipson and D.J. Johnson instead.

• Shane Southwell had another strong game distributing the ball. In addition to his eight points, he had four assists.

• The last time K-State was all alone on top of the Big 12 standings was after a 7-1 start in 2008.

• K-State snapped a three-game losing streak in the series.

• K-State honored the Bramlage family on Saturday in a pre-game ceremony. Last June, Ron, Becky and their children, Brandon, Boston, Beau and Roxanne Bramlage died in a plane crash. The Wildcats’ basketball arena is named after Ron’s grandfather, Fred Bramlage. A portrait of the family will now be displayed in the arena’s Legends Room.
