Commerce Bancshares Inc. on Friday named John Kemper its new president.

Kemper, 35, has been with the bank holding company since 2007 and was named chief operating officer last year.

He succeeds his father, David Kemper, 62, who remains chairman and chief executive officer of Commerce. The holding company, which has $22.2 billion in assets, is the parent of Commerce Bank.

“Over the last six years, John has distinguished himself by steering strategic planning for the company and by directly overseeing many of Commerce’s key growth areas,” David Kemper said in a statement.

Before joining Commerce, John Kemper worked in the New York and Chicago offices of McKinsey & Co., a consulting firm.
