Driver arrested in hit-and-run school bus crash

Updated: 2013-02-08T12:33:23Z

Police arrested the suspected driver who fled on foot after running into the side of a Kansas City Public Schools bus, causing it to tip over.

There were no serious injuries to the five elementary students and two adults on the bus, the Fire Department said. The bus was from the Success Academy at Knotts.

The suspect was arrested shortly before 8 p.m. near 72nd Street and Bales Avenue. Police said he appeared to have some injuries and was taken for treatment.

A red Chrysler Sebring with Missouri plates hit the bus about 4:45 p.m. at 67th Street and Askew Avenue, near Swope Park. The front of the car had extensive damage.

“It impacted the axle (of the bus), which is probably the best place it could have done it, instead of the middle,” said Paul Paikowski of the Kansas City Fire Department. “If it had hit in the middle, it could have hit the gas tank and exploded, so we got very lucky today.”

When the bus tipped over it brought down power lines, causing a temporary outage in the area.
